Day 1
Arrival and Hotel transfers

Meet our airport representative, shake hands and drive to one of our accommodation provider partner for dinner and sleep.

Day 2
Moshi to Ngorongoro - Olmoti Crater to Nainokanoka

In the morning you will be picked up from your hotel and you will travel on a good tarmac road to the village of Mto wa Mbu with the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley towering up ahead. From a viewpoint above the town you will see the Masai plains stretch to the horizon with the alkaline Lake Manyara down below. A short drive further and you will reach the gate of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The journey continues along the scenic crater road, to the Masai village of Nainokanoka. While the camp is being set up, you will hike to the rim of the Olmoti Crater during the afternoon. There is also a possibility to visit a small waterfall along the way. Dinner will be served at the camp. Warm clothing is essential for all days. The camp is at an altitude of 2,650 m.

Day 3
Nainokanoka to Bulati

In the early morning a Masai guide will arrive with his donkeys. After breakfast and loading the donkeys, the journey begins and you will pass many traditional Masai bomas and cattle herds. Soon, you might also see wild animals such as Thompson and Grant’s gazelles, zebras and wildebeests with hungry jackals not far behind and majestic eagles observing the situation. After approximately 16 km of hiking you will reach a campsite not far from the Masai village Bulati.

Day 4
Bulati to Empakai

After breakfast, the journey goes up a hill from where you have a last panoramic view of the grass plains below. The trek continues up and down through the bushy landscape which finally opens up to the active volcano, Oldonyo Lengai. The trek gives you great views of the majestic volcano as well as into the impressive Empakai Crater before reaching the campsite for the night. You can explore the crater and on a well-maintained path you descend to Lake Empakai inside the crater. This alkaline soda lake is an important food source for flamingos, which can be seen throughout the year. Returning to camp supper will be waiting for you. During the night you might hear the flamingos call as they fly back to their breeding nests at Lake Manyara and Lake Natron.

Day 5
Empakai crater to Acacia camp

Today you will hike to the Masai village Naiyobi and following a good path, the village as well as Oldonyo Lengai, an active volcano, can be seen from a distance. After lunch in Naiyobi, the trek leaves the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the landscape becomes drier and warmer. Tonight’s camp will be set up at amongst an acacia forest.

Day 6
Acacia camp to Engaresero to Arusha

This day is not too long and it goes mainly downhill. The highlights of the trek are the great views of Oldonyo Lengai, Lake Natron and the Rift Valley. The rugged countryside looks almost surreal covered by grey ash of the mountain. The trek descends down into the dry and hot Rift Valley, where the ash can be seen up close. Around lunchtime you will reach the waiting vehicle and your driver will take you back to Arusha/Moshi

These drivers are always experienced, reliable and very knowledgeable of the areas they will take you.

How much to give as a tip to safari crew?

Regardless of the size of your expedition, we recommend budgeting around $50 – $100. You can tip in Tanzania Shillings (TZS) or US Dollars but for simplicity-sake, we suggest tipping in USD. Be sure to bring small bills.

Should I carry anything at all? What luggage should I pack?

Your daypack should contain any clothes needed for that day and any personal belongings like your camera or passport. It is important to keep luggage to the barest minimum when on safari, as this will ease the burden of the drivers, vehicles and cook. Baggage should be of the round squashy type rather than hard suitcases that are difficult to fit into vehicle. Try to use something that is both lockable and water proof as luggage can often end up sitting on the roof of the vehicle. It is a good idea to bring another smaller bag so that unwanted clothes can be kept in it at the hotel or our office when you go on safari. This also helps to keep city clothes clean and free from dust. You should also bring a small day pack which can be carried while riding or can be readily accessible when you are traveling in the vehicles on long drives. On camping trips all equipment will be provided. It should be noted that the luggage limit per person on domestic flights is 15-20 kg per person (checked-in and hand luggage). On your inbound flight, don’t check in items that you absolutely need (such as medicines), as it is not uncommon that checked-in luggage gets misdirected and arrives in Tanzania a couple of days after you. It is better to have such items in your hand luggage. Contact us for tailor made safari.

Who will be my guide?

All groups and individual travelers will be provided with an English speaking Tanzanian guide. Some of the guides also speak Spanish or German. They are trained and experienced in leading trips and knowledgeable about the fauna, flora and many more aspects of their country. Often they become lifelong friends with the travelers. Interactions with staff are often the highlight of people’s trips. It is a great way to get to know the real life of Tanzania.

Can I leave some of my luggage in the hotel during safari?

Yes! you will be staying at the same hotel before and after your trip in Moshi or Arusha. Leaving an extra bag at either hotel during your safari tour is free of charge.

Do I need any immunization of medicine?

Talk to your physician and follow recommended CDC guidelines for Tanzania. We recommend talking to your doctor about the use of any prescription medicine. Yellow Fever Vaccination Cards are required for some travelers depending on their travel itinerary. The government of Tanzania requires proof of yellow fever vaccination upon arrival if you are traveling from a country with risk of yellow fever (this does not include the US). If you’re traveling from any of the countries listed in this link, a yellow fever vaccine is required. Question on vaccines? Call your local Travel Medicine Clinic or Yellow Fever Vaccination Clinic

Will we need to filter water?

Safe bottled drinking water will be provided to you along the safari. When in Moshi or Arusha, be sure to only drink bottled water and do not use tap water to brush your teeth.

Anything else I should know?

We always ask that you stay safe on safari tour by drinking enough water, eating well, and communicating openly with your guide about any issues that arise. Be sure to take care of your belongings, be respectful of your travel companions, practice your Swahili with the people you meet along the way, and respect the natural landscape that you’re exploring.
